The Michelin Guide's review
This gem of medieval Russian religious art is a Unesco world heritage site. Andrei Bogolyubsky had the charming Church of the Intercession on the Nerl River built in 1165 as a tribute to his son, killed in a battle against the Bulgars. It is immaculately white, with lovely proportions, delicate bas-reliefs and an enchanting riverside setting. A magical site all year round, it becomes particularly breath-taking when the snow melts (closed to the public) as it seems to float on the River Nerl.
