The Michelin Guide's review
This hamlet looks like a Wild West ghost town, with its wooden houses typically seen in the Western film world. Indeed, it used to be a movie set, and is now inhabited by artists and craftsmen. The Pioneertown Motel was a temporary home to legendary actors such as John Wayne and Gene Autry. The Pappy & Harriet's restaurant and concert hall, which used to be just a façade featuring a Western cantina, became the haunt of the bohemian community of Joshua Tree, located 19km to the east.
