Well worth the diversions
Religious monument
The Michelin Guide's review
The Wat Phra That Phanom temple is highly venerated by Buddhists from the Isan region and Laos. Its central chedi is a spectacular Cham Khmer-style work of brick and stucco, which dates back to the 10C. It is 53m high and collapsed following violent storms, but its reconstruction in 1979 has restored it to its former glory. Make sure you walk around the cloisters, a low enclosure ornamented with delicate floral motifs and numerous seated Buddhas, which draws crowds of worshippers.
