Façade of the Abbey Church of St Gilles

Religious monument
The Michelin Guide's review
The recently restored façade of the abbey church of St-Gilles is a remarkable example of Romanesque sculpture in the south of France. Created in the 12C by artists of several schools (five different styles in all), it draws its inspiration from antiquity: high relief, draped and pleated garments... Salvation is illustrated through episodes of the Life of Christ. The large frieze depicts, from left to right, the events of Easter.
