Poblet Monastery: Chapel of St George
Michelin Guide
Well worth the diversions
Religious monument
The Michelin Guide's review
The magnificent Chapel of St George, built by Alfonso IV the Magnanimous after the conquest of Naples in 1443, is situated to the right of the farm buildings. Despite its modest proportions - 9m long and 5m wide - it is one of the most remarkable buildings of the Monastery of Poblet. The barrel vaulting bears witness to the sheer perfection of the late Gothic style. Outside, its fine and delicate decorative elements make for an attractive effect. Note the king's crown surmounted by a dragon.
