The tapering cornices of the six-storey Pyramid of the Niches built in talud-tablero style give it the appearance of a pagoda. The pyramid's 365 niches paid tribute to the number of days in the solar year, as did as the 365 steps of the Castillo at Chichén Itzá. The interiors of the niches were once painted in red with a blue surround (imagine the effect if the pyramid was repainted in this way today!), although nothing was found inside, indicating that these were purely decorative motifs.
