The Michelin Guide's review
The illustrious Moche or Mochica culture flourished from the 2C to the 8C. The Huaca del Sol (40m high - closed to the public) is the highest known pyramid in Peru, while the Huaca de la Luna (21m high), is famous for its stunning polychrome friezes, many of which depict the "decapitator" deity, Ai Apaec, who presided over human sacrifices. These pyramids, built out of adobe bricks, were painted in bright colours, traces of which remain.
