European paintings have pride of place at the Museo Nacional de San Carlos, housed in a magnificent building designed by Manuel Tolsá. Paintings by Zurbarán (The Supper at Emmaus), Goya and Ingres (The Infant St John the Baptist) punctuate the collections, which cover 500 years of painting from the 15C to the early 20C.
