Religious monument
The Michelin Guide's review
This Koranic school, closed to students since 1960, is the largest in the Maghreb. Around 1570, the Saadian sultan Moulay Abdallah ordered the construction of these Marinid-inspired buildings, which welcomed up to 900 students. You can see the prayer room and, upstairs, 150 bedrooms, with views over either the central courtyard or tiny inner courtyards lined with turned wood balustrades. Multi-coloured zellige tiles, delicately crafted stucco... And all magnificently restored.
