From a height of some 800m, Mt Nebo looks out over the Rift Valley, a geological fracture caused by the meeting of tectonic plates and through which the Jordan flows. But above all, the site owes its renown to Biblical history: it is at the top of this mountain that Moses is said to have died after having seen in the distance the Promised Land that Yahweh intended for his people. A major pilgrimage destination, the site has a sanctuary built in the 4C.
