The beautiful Piazza della Madonna stretches out in front of the basilica. At its centre stands the fountain of the same name (1614), a work by Carlo Maderno and Giovanni Fontana. The statue to the left of the façade represents Pope Sixtus V and dates back to 1589. Adjoining it is the unfinished portico of the Palazzo Apostolico, which now houses a museum.
