Fort Henry
Michelin Guide
Well worth the diversions
Civil and military monument
The Michelin Guide's review
This fort (1837) was reinforced to guard the land approach to the naval dockyard at Frederick Point. The maritime approaches were covered by Martello towers built c. 1846. After never being attacked, the fort eventually fell into decay. Restored in 1938 and now a National Historic Site, it is best known today for the Fort Henry Guard, a troop of specially trained students who recreate the life of the 19C British soldier, guide visitors around the restored quarters and storerooms, and perform military manoeuvres. Don't miss the garrison parade.
