This "fishermen's paradise", with its many lakes, ponds and rivers, is also an ideal region for walkers, with nearly 100km of signposted paths. Rare virgin forest and rock art that is some 3 500 years old (Värikallio Cliffs) are to be found in this impressive natural setting, which was for centuries inhabited by the Sami, until the early 18C when it was colonised by Finns expanding northwards. Hossa is protected as a designation national park.
