An Old West ambience persists in the Stockyards National Historic District, once home to the town's livestock market. A steam train, year-round rodeos and top country-and-western nightlife combine with historic hotels, steakhouses and shops selling typical cowboy clothing to give it a frontier flavour. The small Stockyards Museum chronicles the history of the period with a collection of antiques and photos. At the White Elephant Saloon, hundreds of patrons have left their Stetson hats nailed to the ceiling.
