Before resuming a gentler course in the Walachian plain, the Danube courses a narrow passage between the karst massifs of the south of the Carpatian Mountains (Munţii Locvei and Almăjului) and of the north of the Balkan. There, the rocky landscapes with meagre vegetation are a paradise for experienced hikers, speleologists and fans of unspoilt nature.
