Repeated landslides, water ingress, earthquakes and human error forced the population to abandon the village of Craco for good in the 1960s. Founded in the 8C BC, nowadays Craco is officially a ghost town, and since 2010 has been on the list of sites to be safeguarded by the World Monuments Fund. Only guided tours are permitted.
