The Piton des Neiges, the highest peak on Réunion, peaks at 3 069m on the edge of the Cirque de Cilaos, Cirque de Salazie and Cirque de Mafate. A challenging trek up this dormant volcano takes you through colourfully wooded forests, then vegetation becomes more scarce as you come to splendid mineral landscape, a blend of black, brown and orange hues.
