Attracted by the peaceful countryside and the gift of a large tract of land in Canterbury, the Shakers established a community near the village of Canterbury Center in the 1780s. By the mid-19C, it had grown to some 300 residents. Today 25 original buildings still stand on 694 acres. As in other Shaker communities, residents here made their own clothing, tools and furniture.
