In 1804, Napoleon distributed a second round of medals to the Légion d'Honneur on this spot. 2,000 men received their crosses, dressed in shields and helmets by Du Guesclin and Bayard, in the presence of the Emperor, who sat on a throne in the spot now marked by the obelisk.
