Well worth the diversions
City and village
The Michelin Guide's review
An important stopping point on the route between India and Tibet, Xizhou has retained some superb houses built by wealthy merchants. One example is the Yan family house, which belonged to a tin, copper and tea merchant. Xizhou is also a traditional Bai village, with houses with patios protected by a type of wall-screen, decorated with animal and plant motifs. Every day, a small lively market is held in the village square.
