Technically a pura (stately home), rather than a kraton, this palace was built in 1757, after the partition of the kingdom of Mataram and now houses Prince Mangkunegara IX and his family. In the courtyard, the huge pendopo (3,270m2) was for many years the biggest of Java. The Pringgitan, official reception room, displays portraits of sunan, while the princes' collections showcase masks, jewellery, ceremonial adornments and chastity belts for men and women.
