The Pyramid of the Moon, standing above the square of the same name, displays a more sophisticated architectural style than the Pyramid of the Sun, despite being smaller in size. Excavations carried out on the building since 1999 have allowed archaeologists to discover seven stages of successive construction, as well as unearthing several funerary chambers full of offerings, including bodies of sacrificed men and animals.
