The Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester is dedicated to the memory of James John Averell, Emily S. Watson's only son, who donated his personal collections to the institution. The museum has also acquired works having belonged to other patrons, and continues to pursue an active policy of acquisitions. Its manageable size, well-organised rooms, innovative museography and the variety of its collections, which cover 5 000 years of art history, make this a fascinating place.
