The church and convent were built in 1506 just inside the walls of the Kalsa at the behest of Giacomo Basilico. Building work was not yet completed when the Turkish threat made it necessary to build a new bastion just behind the church. After a chequered history, work was eventually completed and the building has now been transformed into a venue for concerts and temporary exhibitions. The church is the only example of Northern Gothic architecture in Sicily.
