These mineral springs were a mecca of spirituality for the First Nations. As they burst forth, the cold water, rich in iron, formed pools of ochre clay that was used as body paint and dyes for tipis and clothing. Later on, the ochre fields were mined by Europeans to supply a dye factory in Calgary.
