Sir Bartle Frere was responsible for much of the development of modern European Mumbai in the state of Maaharashtra. Flora Fountain was erected in his honour on Martyr Square, now known as Hutatma Chowk, in the city's business district. Built in 1864, the monument is typical of the British colonial period.
