Created in 1878 as a branch of Laval University in Quebec City, Montreal University became an independent institution in 1919. The university is currently the largest French-speaking university in the world outside Paris. Its 13 departments are supplemented by the École Polytechnique and the École des Hautes Études Commerciales. The soberly adorned main building and stylised geometric surfaces exemplify the Art Deco movement.
