The Michelin Guide's review
A fortress, then later a prison, the Château d'If was immortalised by the writer Alexandre Dumas who imprisoned three of his heroes here - the Man in the Iron Mask, the Count of Monte Cristo and Abbé Faria. In reality, the prisoners held here were largely Huguenots and political prisoners following the 1851 coup d'État. The tour includes video extracts of the misadventures of the Count of Monte Cristo. From the terrace, enjoy panoramic views of the harbour, the Frioul islands and the city of Marseille.
