Vasco da Gama bridge

Well worth the diversions
Civil and military monument
The Michelin Guide's review
Built between 1995 and 1998, this grandiose 17km-long road bridge crosses the Tagus between Savacem and Monitjo. It was designed to relieve the traffic on the Ponte 25 de Abril and form a direct link between the north and south, without it being necessary to go through the centre of Lisbon. Motorists cover several kilometres with the water in full view, as it is never hidden by the bridge structure. It is a very fine piece of architecture, made up of several spans supported by pillars up to 150m high, buried up to 95m underground!
