Shugaku-in Imperial Villa
Michelin Guide
Well worth the diversions
Civil and military monument
The Michelin Guide's review
Facing the Higashiyama range, this imperial residence built in the 16C on the site of the Shugaku temple is made up of numerous villas and teahouses. Divided into different pavilions, three villas are built on a 40m-high slope set in a 28-ha park. The upper villa is the most interesting: its "pavilion near a cloud" commands a fine vantage point of Yokuryuchi lake and its teahouse, Kyusui-tei, standing majestically in the centre of the lake.
