The Maidan is a huge park that is very popular with the inhabitants of Kolkata. Occupying an area which was deforested to open up the line of fire for the cannons of Fort William, built in 1758 and around which the city developed, the park is home to the Victoria Memorial Hall erected in honour of Queen Victoria. Today the Maidan is a popular outdoor destination where the inhabitants go to relax and play cricket.
