Born out of a shipyard founded in 1782, Cherbourg military harbour is made up of a naval base and the headquarters of the naval construction management specialised in the construction and berthing of submarines. The French navy carries out public service tasks, such as controlling maritime traffic and fighting against pollution with its fleet of "Channel patrol vessels".
