The Michelin Guide's review
This site recalls the completion of the transcontinental railroad with the driving of a symbolic "golden spike" connecting Central Pacific and Union Pacific lines on May 10, 1869. Although trains have long since chosen a different route across the Great Salt Lake Desert, working replicas of the two steam locomotives that first met here are on display May to October. Costumed reenactments of the original ceremony are often staged. A visitor center (open year-round) displays artifacts and photos.
