The Michelin Guide's review
This 5m-tall bronze statue (the Colossus) keeps its secrets hidden behind its opaque gaze and closed lips. Is this the Byzantine emperor Valentian I? How did it get here? Was it brought from Ravenna by Frederick II or, as some believe, was it found washed up on the beach one morning in 1204? What is certain is that the statue dates from the 5C and that its legs were melted down in the 14C to provide bronze for the bells of the Basilica di Siponto, only to be replaced in the 15C.
