The Michelin Guide's review
By making Corfu a World Heritage Site on account of its "exceptional" character, UNESCO fetes its mosaic of cultures. The island's Greek and Byzantine heritages were enriched, from the 14C, by the mark of the Lion of Venice, the French in the 19C and its status as a British protectorate. Yet Corfu remains Greek, and cultivates its identity. Although mass tourism is rather invasive nowadays, it suffices to get off the beaten track to discover the authenticity of the island.
